Riverfest 2025 Celebrates Successful Event with Community Thanks

Thank you

Riverfest 2025 took place on Saturday (10th May), bringing a vibrant celebration of the Isle of Wight’s river heritage and community spirit to Newport Quay. Organisers are now expressing their heartfelt thanks to all those who made this year’s event such a success.

The event, which is entirely free to attend, is one of a kind in terms of scale and accessibility. In an era when big events tend to be ticketed, Riverfest is determined to continue to offer a free day of fun and community celebration to the Isle of Wight’s residents and visitors.

Behind the scenes, Riverfest organisation takes around 7 months of dedication. Event organisers Paddy McHugh (chair) and Shane Thornton (vice chair) work tirelessly to put together the many elements that make Riverfest special – from live music and entertainment to charity stalls and family activities.

Several generous sponsors made the event possible this year, including: Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council; Red Funnel; Cherry Godfrey & Lawdit Solicitors

Other assistance came from NDL Event Power Solutions, SDC Marquees, Widget Productions, the Isle of Wight Council, and Newport Harbour personnel.

Organisers said the task is “endless but so rewarding”, with all funds raised being invested directly back into the event to help local charities, businesses and river-based community enjoyment.

Paddy McHugh, events organiser and chair of Newport Carnival & Community Events Association, said:

“Volunteers are the backbone of Riverfest. From the Newport Carnival team to friends at other carnivals, such as Harry Finnis and Ben Holbrook from Sandown Carnival, their efforts are worth their weight in gold.

“My extended thanks to the Isle of Wight High Sheriff Jacqueline Gazzard, who crowned Newport Carnival’s Royalty for 2025, and Cllr Ray Harrington Val for opening the event.

“My thanks also include the marching bands, dancers, singers, and traders who contributed to bringing the day to life.”

Shane Thornton, events organiser and vice-chair of Newport Carnival & Community Events Association, added:

“I am proud to be part of a small group of people who put on this great, fun, free, family event in the heart of Newport on the Isle of Wight.

“Without the support from friends, family, committee and local businesses, we simply would not be able to hold these great events.

“A personal thank you to everyone who attended on the day, thousands of you showed your support, and it is truly amazing to see after 7 months of organising.”

The people responsible for organising Riverfest now urge anyone wanting to help secure the event’s future, either by sponsorship or volunteering, to get in touch with them.

Riverfest is an event organised entirely by volunteers, as opposed to most large events that have paid staff. Any amount of assistance counts in helping Riverfest remain free and alive for generations to come.
